Raised in a minister's home, Linda Scales Mercer has always been involved with music. She began singing with church groups and taking music lessons at age six. By the time she was in junior high school she was playing the piano and cello. However, in high school she realized that her voice was the indeed the most interesting and intriguing instrument she could ever play.

While determined to produce her own distinctive style of song, Linda draws much of her inspiration from great female vocalists like Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae, Etta James, Mahalia Jackson and Barbara Streisand.
